Recovering from vein procedures
One consideration that may be neglected by prospective vein treatment patients is aftercare. Sometimes we are so concerned about the procedure itself we don’t take time to plan for the aftermath. Thankfully, today’s minimally invasive procedures have enhanced recovery, but there is still a period of restriction. Of course, you should always consult with a qualified vein doctor concerning after procedure care, but here are a few guidelines.
How soon can I get back to normal?
Two of the most common procedures are Radio Frequency ablation and endovenous laser treatments. These are both outpatient procedures. Patients return home that day, and are encouraged to start walking immediately after the procedure. However, strenuous exercise such as weight training should be avoided for two to three weeks. There will be bruising and discomfort or pain for two to four weeks. The good news is you should be able to return to most normal activities such as working within 24 to 72 hours. A mild painkiller such as ibuprofen is recommended if some pain persists.
Do I have to wear those high stockings?
Compression stockings should be worn for at least three days post-procedure. This will promote blood flow, and therefore helps mitigate discomfort. Consult with your vein doctor concerning any follow-up tests such as ultrasounds that may be required to check the efficacy of the procedure.
What’s the bottom line?
In most cases, full recovery is achieved within two weeks. Since each patient is different, that time frame may be a bit less or a bit more. Schedule a consult at Metro Vein Centers to get the full story.
